Maxine
I have written a novel called ‘A Pebble for Remembrance’. It is dedicated to the memory of my wife, Maxine.
Leah Perl is a 15-year-old Jewish girl from Kalish, Poland, (then part of the Russian empire) at the beginning of the 20th century. Her family, concerned for her safety in a period of virulent antisemitism, send her to England with her aunt. She hopes to earn money to bring her parents and her sister to England, but her hopes are soon dashed.
She is eventually forced to leave her aunt and uncle and, soon after, marries a decent but feckless young man. She then navigates the great political upheavals of the age: the Great War, the Depression, Fascism and then the Second World War, raising four children but never forgetting about her family in the ‘haim’. Left behind in Poland, the Perls have to confront the horrors of war and antisemitism and the hope of salvation in a Jewish homeland.
Bombed out of their home in the Blitz, Leah and her family become internally displaced persons ending up in a vicarage in rural Buckinghamshire.
After the war, she discovers what happened to her family and a reunion becomes possible.
In memory of my wife, all proceeds will go to Bowel Cancer UK.

Whatever your opinion of the book, if you make a contribution, you will have supported a worthy cause. And, if you like the book, tell someone else so we can build some momentum and raise a lot of money with the hope that, one day, no one will have to suffer as we and so many others have.
I want to improve the book so that I can, perhaps, find an editor and publisher or go for self-publication.
I want it to be as good as it can be because I want to raise money for charity.
